Understanding Vitamin D?
Vitamin D helps to control the amount of calcium and phosphate in our bodies. Both are needed for healthy bones, teeth and muscles.
Vitamin D is found naturally in a small number of foods, including oily fish, red meat, liver and egg yolks. It’s also found in fortified foods like breakfast cereals and fat spreads.
However, it’s often difficult for us to get the recommended amount of vitamin D from food alone. Our main source of vitamin D is from the action of sunlight on our skin.
Supplementation with Vitamin D, especially during the the Autumn and winter months is recommended for adults across the UK. 10mcg as part of a multivitamin is recommended.
When to test
We would advise patients to only undertake this vitamin D test Monday to Thursday and then sending it directly back to our laboratory. This ensures that there are no delays in our lab receiving your test kit.
Specific biomarker within this test includes:
✓ Vitamin D

” If you get little exposure to the sun, suffer from milk allergies or adhere to a strict vegan diet you may be at risk for vitamin D deficiency. Often known as the sunshine vitamin, this vitamin is produced by the body in response to your skin being exposed to sunlight.
It is also occurs naturally in a few foods; including fish, fish liver oils, egg yolks and in fortified dairy and grain products.
Essential for strong bones, as it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Research also reveals the importance of vitamin D in protecting against a host of health problems.”
